Second Chance 11

Carly stands at the foot of the steps looking up; as Marshall comes in and shuts the door.

“Go ahead. I promise to stay here.” Marshall sincerely whispers, knowing Carly wants to go check on Madison, and she hurries up the steps, as he fights with himself to stay.

After several minutes Carly returns and they stand awkwardly staring at each other before Carly nervously moves to the sofa, and Marshall follows sitting in the chair.

“I’m sorry . . . . . I know that doesn’t make anything better. . . . .” Marshall sincerely says, not really knowing what to say.

Marshall . . . . we can sit here and apologize for all our faults . . . . . . which could take several days for both of us . . . . . . We’re both guilty for our relationship not working.” Carly sincerely tries to explain, as he quickly stands and begins to pace.

“Most likely it’s not going to change anything.” Carly adds as she nervously watches him pace.

“Not Going To Change Anything!” Marshall angrily states, pacing.

“Keep your voice down!” Carly firmly warns, standing.

“Everything has changed! . . . I knew you’d get your family and white picked fence. That’s one of the things that I love about you! Your strong determination. I just didn’t think you’d cut me out of it! . . . .” Marshall sincerely explains, closing the space between them.

“WHAT?” Carly interrupts in total disbelief.

“Keep your voice down.” Marshall states in a mocking tone, quickly placing his hands on each side of her cheeks and pulling in her into a passionate kiss.

Carly leans on him with caution resting her on his chest, as their mouths battle for passionate control over the other.

“You gotta get back on that side of the room.” Carly breathlessly whispers, slowly pulling away.

“I like it right here.” Marshall breathlessly whispers, looking down at her, resting his has on her hips.

“I never could think with you this close.” Carly says, slightly pushing him away.

“I’ve wanted to kiss you since that night at the restaurant.” Marshall says with a smile, as she takes several more steps back.

“So where do we go from here?” Marshall sincerely asks, sitting down on the sofa.

Marshall if I knew . . .” Carly says, starting to move away and he quickly pulls her down beside him.

“What do you want?” Marshall sincerely asks, gently holding her hands.

“I . . . I’ve . . .” Carly struggles to say; total disbelief that he actually thinks money is going to fix this.

“Wait! That didn’t sound good . . . . . . What are your plans? Mine . . .  is to stick around as much as you’ll let me.” Marshall struggles to explain, tightening his hold on her hands to stop her from moving away.

“MOMMY! I’m awake! Mommy I’m ready to get up NOW!” Madison yells from his room as he begins to shake the side of the crib.

They both simultaneously look towards the steps as they hear Madison fussing, and Carly quickly stands and takes a deep breath before going up the steps.

“Did you have a nice nap?” Carly cheerfully forces her self to ask, walking into the nursery, picking him up from the crib, desperately trying to hide her totally confused mind and heart.

“Why do people always ask if you had a nice nap? If you’re asleep you don’t know. I had this dream about the water was BLUE.” Madison explains, as Carly places him back in the crib with a kiss, and begins changing him.

“I sure did miss you last night. Did you have fun at Granny’s? . . . . Uuhh there is someone here that I really think you should meet . .  know . . .” Carly explains, while changing his clothes and diaper, wondering if Marshall is the one that put him down for his nap.

“I missed you too . . . Granny let me stay up LATE! I stayed up later than Kevvy! Granddaddy gave us horsy rides and gave us a drink of PESPSI! We didn’t tell Granny. Granny told Granddaddy she just don’t understand why you don’t find a nice husband. Granddaddy told her to stay out of it, but I promised Granny I would help her find you one.” Madison excitedly explains his night with his Grandparents.

“I really think you’ve already met him . . . .” Carly nervously explains, struggling with a very hyper Madison.

“Who? Mommy you know I don’t like strangers.” Madison quickly says, only hearing the last part of what Mommy said, struggling to get up.

“Is it Marshall and the giant? Marshall said we could go to Can . . . this place that has blue water. MOM!” Madison asks; not remembering the name of the place that Marshall was talking about, but yells out for Mommy as she is leaving the room.

Carly quickly goes to the bathroom, and splashes cold water on her face, and pulls her hair up into a lose ponytail, while trying to reassure herself that everything is going to be okay, repeating over and over Be Calm Be Calm in her head.

“You ready.” Carly asks with a nervous smile, trying not to act or look upset around Madison, as she lifts him up into her arms, and places a kiss on the top of his head.

“Been Ready!” Madison happily states.

Carefully Carly makes her way down the steps her whole body shaking; as thoughts race through her mind as to what Marshall’s reaction is going to be. Him kidnapping Madison and running off to an ungodly poor country; killing him if he even looks as if he might do something that stupid. What if he doesn’t like Madison, and never wants to see him again because of what she has done.

Carly stops at the bottom of the steps and takes a deep breath, kissing Madison on the forehead than nervously looking over at Marshall who looks as if he’s going to faint, but quickly stands.

“I like breathing!” Madison tries to firmly state not liking being held so tight, but knows his Mommy isn’t listening; she’s to busy looking at Marshall.

“Marshall . . . . this is . . . .” Carly struggles to say but not really knowing how to introduce them, nervously walking over to him.

“Madison.” Marshall quickly helps, as Madison reaches out for him, remembering the shinning medallion.

“HI!” Madison excitedly asks, remembering he wanted to ask Mommy about the way Marshall holds onto him.

“Did you have a nice nap?” Marshall asks, as Carly quickly sits down and Marshall sits down beside her as Madison babbles and plays with the shinning medallion as before.

“Mommy already asked. It was okay I guess. I was asleep. What does D 12 stand for?” Madison curiously asks

Carly feeling as if she’s intruding, wonders if maybe she should give them some time alone, but quickly dismisses the ideal with the front door being so close; trying not to stare as Madison holds tightly to the medallion, and babbles almost like he’s asking Marshall about it in his baby language.

“Carly . . .  you can relax. I’m not going to kidnap him.” Marshall says in a reassuring tone, glancing over at her and then leaning back, and she forces a smile.

“He has toys.” Carly quickly comments, pointing over to a large bright red Rubbermaid plastic tub in the corner of the room, and Marshall gets up and walks over and sits Madison down beside it, who quickly pulls himself up and starts pulling toys out and throwing them down on the floor.

“I have this really cool ball I think you’ll like. We can trade.” Madison excitedly explains, searching the toy box, as Marshall sits down a few steps away in the chair.

“I was four months pregnant when I came to live with Grandma. I didn’t know I was . . . . . she’s the one that told me. I just couldn’t stop crying, I would cry over the stupidest things. She told me that’s exactly how she was when she was pregnant with Dad.” Carly sincerely explains, after a long silence; Marshall listening to her and glancing over at her with a smile several times, while keeping a close eye on Madison who seems to be searching for something.

“So you were pregnant when you left me. I guess that explains why you were so emotional . . . that is besides living with me not being so great.” Marshall comments, while still watching Madison.

“Three months.” Carly says, thinking back to the last couple of months of their relationship, and the pressures of living with Eminem.

“Found It!” Madison excitedly yells turning around and holding the ball out to Marshall, but him staring at Mommy again doesn’t see the great ball.

“Madison Bailey Montgomery was born at one thirty six in the morning, on Tuesday March  . . .” Carly begins to explain but suddenly stops as Madison nonchalantly walks over to Marshall and hands him the ball.

“See it’s a great ball! It’s one of my favorites! Wanna trade?” Madison excitedly explains, after nonchalantly walking over to Marshall with his favorite bright red toddler size ball.

“He he . . .  he . just walked . . .  he.” Carly stumbles to get out without crying or screaming in excitement, rushing over and getting down on her knees, pulling Madison in her arms and placing kisses all over him, Marshall realizing what just happened and telling himself over and over not to cry.

“MOMMY! I can’t breath!” Madison yells, from her holding him to tight, but mad she interrupted his trading for the shinning D 12.

“Tell ME! I didn’t just imagine that. He just walk over here?” Carly happily asks, as Marshall gets down on the floor beside them, handing the ball back to Madison.

“Nooooooo . . . I give you the ball and you give me the shinning D 12. It’s called trading. Kevvy and I do it all the time.” Madison agaitedly tries to explain, flopping down, and tossing the ball at Marshall.

“Get over there.” Carly happily states, standing him back up holding onto him with one hand, while waving her other hand to the other side of the room.

“Whada we doing?” Marshall asks as he begins to crawl to the other side of the room.

“Don’t look at me! I don’t know what’s wrong with her.” Madison agaitedly says, noticing Marshall didn’t catch the ball, and looking at him strangely.

“Don’t crawl! I wanna see if he’ll do it again!” Carly quickly yells and Marshall stops and looks back at her with a laugh.

“HEAH! What’s wrong with crawling?” Madison agaitedly asks, wanting his Mommy to let go of his arm so he can get the ball.

“Don’t Crawl I don’t want him to see you crawling I wanna see if he’ll walk again.” Carly happily rattles in one continuous breath, as Marshall sits down and faces them.

“He can crawl if he wants too! How much coffee have you had today? Aunt D doesn’t like when you have a lot of coffee.” Madison tries to explain, struggling to get out of her tight hold.

“What if he falls?” Marshall asks in concern.

“I’m Not Gonna Fall!” Madison firmly states looking over at Marshall.

“It’s carpet. Just hold your hands out.” Carly quickly says, letting go of Madison, who just stands and looks at her with the expression “My Mommy’s Gone Crazy”

“Hold up the medallion.” Carly quickly demands in excitement, and then moves Madison over a little so Marshall is directly in front of him.

“Let go of me!” Madison very loudly demands, glancing over at Marshall for help.

“Carly calm down a little. You’re scaring him.” Marshall carefully comments, holding up the medallion so Madison can see it, and he simple walks over to Marshall with just a little swaying; both of them swaying with him.

“AAAAAAHHHHHH!” Carly screams happily, jumping up, scaring Madison who quickly wraps his little arms around Marshall’s neck.

“Mommy! You scared me!” Madison firmly yells, resting his head on Marshall’s shoulder, getting that feeling again like his Mommy is holding him.

“Carly. . . He’s never gonna walk again if you keep screaming.” Marshall calmly states with a large smile, caressing over Madison back to reassure him that his mommy isn’t crazy.

“I need the video camera.” Carly happily states; rushing up the steps, Marshall laughing as he slightly pulls Madison away.

“Thanks for waiting for me.” Marshall sincerely says, looking into prefect blue eyes, not believing he actually saw his son’s first steps.

“You’re welcome.” Madison sincerely says, not really sure why he is thanking him, but Mommy always saying to use your manners, looking up into tear filled blue eyes.
