Second Chance 16
An hour passes with
While Carly takes Madison to his room to dress him for bed,
Marshall goes down to the kitchen and sits down at the small desk in the corner
and calls Hailie, desperately wanting to tell her about Madison but deciding on
Wednesday when he sees her again would be best, as he talks with Hailie he
can’t help but read little sticky notes and notes on a large calendar, and what
concerns him most is the bills. After talking with Hailie he quickly writes
down a few things on a sticky note and shoves it in his pocket, and is about to
make a call on his cel-phone when Carly walks into the room.
“You can take a shower now. The bathroom is back in order.”
Carly says with a laugh but stops as she looks at him, wondering what he is up
to.
“I want you and Madison to come with me to
“Marshall . . . . . I . . . . I’m sorry . . . . I just can’t pick up and leave for three
days. I have a job.
“Alright! Play hooky on Wednesday and come home.”
“
“Why do you always do that?”
“Do what?” Carly asks in a confused tone, as he moves even
closer to her.
“Say Marshall in that tone.”
“What tone?” Carly says with a forced smile.
“That tone as if you’re talking to a five year old. When you
start off with my name in that tone I know it’s not gonna be good.”
“It’s like my early warning thing, that sometimes I don’t catch
onto until afterwards.”
“
“See you did it again.”
“I did not! . . . . Just
. . . . just I thought you wanted to take a shower.” Carly says struggling to
think of something to say.
“We’ll finish this when I get out of the shower.”
Carly takes several deep breathes as her fingertips
subconsciously caress over her bottom lip, drifting off on how to make sense of
the last couple hours, the last couple of days.
Carly is quickly pulled from her thoughts as a large furry
monster is pushed onto her lap and she quickly looks down at
“I need a drink.”
“You ready for bed?” Carly asks as he holds tightly to Elmo, but
stands on her lap as she holds him tightly by his waist.
“Not really. But I’m ready for my milk and story.”
Carly carries Madison into the kitchen and fixes him a sippy cup
full of milk, while juggling him on her hip like so many nights before this,
with Elmo dangling by his arm that’s tightly held by Madison’s little hand.
“You seem to like . . . .
. . . . .
“You’re doing that shaking thing like
“Remember me telling you about your Daddy? . . . . . . . . . .
how he is a very lovely, caring man . . . . and that . . . . . . . and that we both love you . . . . . . . . . .
it’s just that we didn’t get along with each other.” Carly struggles to
explain, as she mind drifts to all the conversion she’s had with
“I think it’s time for little man to go to bed.” Carly lovely
whispers as she kisses the top of
Carly slowly takes Madison and Elmo to his room, and picks up
the story book resting on the top of the three shelf bookcase and sits down in
the white adult rocker and opens the book and begins to read as she cradles a
very sleepy Madison, and as usual he is asleep before the end of the book, but
as she begins to close the book, Marshall whose been listening to her read from
the door way, quietly walks into the room and knells down in front of her.
“Finish.”
Carly slowly finishes the story and slowly closes the book as
Marshall stands and places a kiss on her forehead than Madison’s, then she
slowly places a sleeping Madison in his crib and kisses his cheek and wishes
him sweet dreams followed by Marshall.
They both then awkwardly stare at each other for several intense
moments, before Carly leaves the room and rushes down the steps, desperately
needing to put space between her and him.
“So what do you do after he is asleep?”
“Get ready for the next day.” Carly states leaving the room, and
“Do you want anymore of this before I put it away?” Carly asks
as she looks at the left over Chinese food, then a quick glance at
“I’m fine.”
After Carly loads the dishwasher and wipes down the counters she
quickly goes into the living room and pulls a blanket and pillow out of the
closet and hands them to
“Good Night.” Carly sincerely says with a smile, and then begins
to leave the room.
“Haven’t we tried this before?”
“Sorry! Don’t want to make it boring! Sleep on the floor!” Carly
jokily says as she quickly goes over and takes the blanket and pillow from him
and drops them in the middle of the floor and then goes up the steps, as
thoughts of their first night run through her mind.
“I’m Not Sleeping On No Damn Sofa Or Floor!”
“Keep Your Voice Down!” Carly threatens in a strong whisper as
she rushes from the bathroom, and comes face to face with him.
“Whatda ya gonna do? Beat me with your toothbrush?”
