Second Chance ~ 20

Marshall and Carly drift off to a peaceful sleep; awaken almost an hour later by Madison yelling that he is definitely finished with his nap.

“MOMMY! MOMMY! I’m Awake! I Need To Get Up! There’s Things To Do!” Madison firmly states, and then begins to shake the side of the crib.

“I’ll give ya a dollar if you go.” Carly sleepily mumbles, praying for one more minute of sleep, and Marshall half asleep begins crawling over her.

“I’m going.” Carly says becoming more awake, looking up at Marshall, but both of them suddenly stop struggling to get up when Madison yells out Daddy.

“He’s calling for his Daddy.” Marshall proudly announces hearing him angrily yell for his Daddy and jumps from the sofa and runs up the steps.

“Yeah Right Happy! I give you a month.” Carly sarcastically comments really to no one sitting up, rolling her neck to get the kinks out.

“About Time! Where’s Mommy?” Madison asks as Marshall happily walks into the room, and picks him up.

“Did you have a nice nap?” Marshall cheerfully asks, but quickly comes to the relation that he is very wet, as Madison rolls his eyes.

“I took a NAP!”  Madison agitatedly states as Marshall lays him back down and begins to change his diaper.

“I know I did.” Marshall says with a large smile, as thoughts of Carly’s warm body makes him sigh.

“Mommy made you take a nap too?” Madison totally amazed, that Mommy can even make big people take a nap.

“Okay! I think I got everything on right.” Marshall confidently comments after a few minutes, finishing putting Madison’s shorts back on and stands him up in the crib.

“Everything feels right.” Madison happily says, reaching out for Daddy to get him OUT of jail, but Mommy calling it a crib, a place to keep Baby safe, while Sandman visits.

“Be right back!” Marshall says, kissing his forehead and then rushes from the room, before he needs a boxer change.

Madison flops down and grabs Elmo and wonders what it’s going to be like having Daddy around, maybe going to the park more, will he have to change his clothes as much as Mommy and Aunt Dru thinks he does, with Mommy and Daddy more applesauce and mac and cheese.

Marshall starts back in the room but stops in the doorway, and watches Madison for several minutes, which seems to be in deep thought.

“You ready?” Marshall asks, as Madison stands.

“Been ready.” Madison says as Marshall picks him up and leaves the room, both of them all smiles.

“The one in the living room gets better movies.” Marshall jokily comments, walking into the kitchen and finding Carly staring at the microwave.

“Ha Ha.” Carly sarcastically says with a laugh, turning around smiling, and then reaching out for the sippy cup of juice on the counter, simultaneously as Marshall, sparks flying as their hands connect.

“Juice!” Madison states, seeing both their hands on his juice cup, but neither making an attempt to hand it over, just making funny eyes at each other.

“JUICE!” Madison firmly states again and Carly quickly hands it to him.

“Are you hungry? I thought I would make an early dinner so you could eat before you have to leave.” Carly explains moving to the cabinet and pulling out rice as Marshall is putting Madison in the highchair.

“Whys don’t we go out to eat?” Marshall asks sitting down at the table.

“Excuse me?” Carly asks, knowing she didn’t hear him correctly

“You don’t have to make dinner we can go out.” Marshall simply comments.

“How?” Carly asks, knowing they can’t just go out like normal people.

“Well . . . we pick a place, call and make a reservation, and then we get dressed get in the car and drive.” Marshall jokingly explains, walking over to her.

“Smartass.” Carly playfully whispers with a laugh tugging on the front of his t-shirt; both of them thinking it really would be nice to go out like a normal couple.

“I need to get down.” Madison states finished with his juice, banging the cup on the tray, pulling them from their thoughts.

“Go play . . . dinner will be ready in about an hour.” Carly cheerfully explains, and he happily takes Madison outside to play.

Madison isn’t happy about coming back in and getting his face washed but when he notices the mashed potatoes all is right with the world. Dinner conversation is a lot of catching up on what the other has been doing.

After dinner Marshall goes through Madison baby book, trying to read every word, but Madison making it very difficult, wanting him to see every toy from the toy box. Finished with the kitchen Carly sees Marshall struggling and takes the baby book.

“I wasn’t finished.” Marshall states picking Madison up and following her into the kitchen.

“I know.” Carly comments pulling a jumbo Hefty One Zip plastic bag out of the cabinet, and placing it in, and nervously turning to face him.

“If anything happens to it Your Dead!” Carly firmly explains, handing it back.

“Thank you . . . . I promise.” Marshall nervously says, taking the book.

About an hour goes by both playing with Madison, before it’s time for Marshall to leave. Carly disagrees with leaving Max and Kyle for security, but knows there’s no way getting around Marshall in the matter. With tears from all Marshall leaves and Carly tries to go through her normal Monday night routine, but with two large men sitting in her living room and Madison very irritable finds it very hard.

An early and longer bath time relaxes Madison a little. After two bedtime stories Carly snuggles down beside a finally asleep Madison, laughing to herself at the now stupid comments she use to make about babies sleeping in their parents bed and how she would never be one of them.
