Second Chance 8
Marshall is awakened by the sun shining
brightly through the large picture window, and moans his dissatisfaction while
stretching.
“Morning.” Box moans as he is
stretching on the sofa.
Marshall sleepily growls as he stands and
continues too stretch.
“You’re such a fuckin’ friendly
person.” Box jokily comments, as he is sitting up, knowing that Marshall is not a morning person, but himself
loving the beginning of a new day.
Marshall growls again and flips him off as he
is walking towards the stairs.
“Where you going Prince Charming?” Box
asks with a laugh, as Marshall stops and leans over the banister.
“To Take A Piss! Do you mind?” Marshall sarcastically asks.
“Don’t forget to put the toilet seat
up and back down when you’re done.” Box jokily says, as he laughs loving give Marshall a hard time.
“AND don’t forget to wash your hands
afterwards.” Box quickly adds, as Marshall disappears up the steps.
Marshall returns a few minutes later, and Box
is watching television.
“You take longer than a Bitch!” Box
comments as he is walking past Marshall heading towards the stairs.
Marshall ignoring Box’s comments picks
up the picture from the chair and carefully places it back in it’s place, and
goes into the kitchen, and puts the glasses and chip bowls they used last night
in the dishwasher, and then checks out the refrigerator for food options.
“You have to make a food run.” Marshall states to Box coming into the room,
and then hands him a glass of orange juice.
“Taco Bell or Pizza?” Box asks, and Marshall gives a playful hurt expression, as
he is pulling eggs and milk from the refrigerator.
“To a Grocery Store! I’m gonna cook.” Marshall states as he begins looking through
the lower cabinets for pans.
“YES! I’m gonna cook!” Marshall quickly comments as Box is
commenting.
“Is Carly’s fire insurance paid up?”
Box comments with a laugh.
“I need something like bacon . . .
anything to go with the eggs. Everything she’s got is frozen . . . and some
kind of bread NOT regular bread something nice BUT not fancy.” Marshall explains as he leans against the
counter.
“Anything else MRS. Mathers.” Box
jokily comments.
“Just make it fast!” Marshall comments, as he flips him off.
“Flowers . . . NO Forget The Flowers!” Marshall adds quickly, deciding against it, as
thoughts of all the flowers he sent Carly after she left, and she having all
them sent back to him.
“I’ll be back.” Box comments then
leaves as Marshall begins to look in the top cabinets for spices, but
suddenly stops when he opens a well organized cabinet full of baby foods and
snacks.
Marshall slowly takes out several of the
Gerber jars and microwave meals and reads the labels, even scrunches up his
nose when he reads Arrowroot Cookies. He slowly puts everything back as it was,
but puts the Arrowroot Cookies behind Apple Graham Crisps and Banana Cookies.
Marshall thoughts wonder off to when Hailie
ate baby food, and the mess she use to make, but is pulled from his thoughts
after a few minutes by a knock at the door.
Marshall quickly goes to the front door
expecting Box and is met by a middle age woman holding the child from the
picture.
“Morning! I’m Dru’s mother Tina
Baldwin. I thought maybe Carly would like this back.” Mrs. Baldwin jokily says,
as she is handing Marshall the child, who eagerly goes to him.
“HI! I’m Madison. I think I know you.” Madison happily says.
“What’s wrong? Is Carly here?” Mrs.
Baldwin asks, as Marshall stands with a stunned expression, as the child grabs
hold of his D-12 medallion, and begins checking it out.
“Uuuhh . . . uh she’s in the shower.” Marshall studiers while he is trying to
remember to breath, as he holds tightly to the child.
“Don’t be so nervous! And could you
not hold me so tight. I like breathing.” Madison says, as he is holding tightly to
medallion.
“Do you want me to stay till Carly
finishes?” Mrs. Baldwin asks in concern, as she reaches to take Madison back from Marshall.
“NOOO! . . . . . sorry . . . I’m Marshall. We’ll be fine.” Marshall quickly says as he takes a step away
from her, totally petrified that she’ll take the child away, and quickly
extends his hand.
“Granny! Did you see this?” Madison comments holding the medallion out
for his Granny to see.
“Okay . . . Tell Carly he’s already
had lunch. So he should be ready for his nap.” Mrs. Baldwin says, as she shakes
Marshall’s hand, kinda of worrying if it is
alright to leave Madison with a man that she’s never seen before, but knowing Madison doesn’t like strangers and is content
on pulling and twisting on what appears to be a very expensive necklace.
“I Don’t Need A Nap!” Madison firmly states, as he looks up at Marshall.
“I’m going to set this here.” Mrs.
Baldwin says, as she sets an overnight bag on the floor next to the door, as
she watches Marshall totally lost in watching Madison inspect the shinning medallion.
“It’s awful shinning, but it doesn’t
taste good!” Madison says, as he holds the medallion up to Marshall that’s now dripping with slobber.
“Thanks.” Marshall says after a few seconds, never
taking his eyes off Madison.
“Do you know it’s not nice to stare?” Madison asks, looking up into Marshall’s eyes.
“You sure you’re going to be okay?”
Mrs. Baldwin asks in concern, as she looks at Marshall who seems to be a bundle
of nerves.
“We’ll be fine! Won’t we?” Marshall says, never taking his eyes from the
child he holds in his arms, but knowing if this woman doesn’t leave soon he’s
going to collapse in the very spot he stands.
“Sure! But you’re still shaking! I
think maybe you should sit down. Before you drop ME!” Madison says glancing at his Granny then at Marshall, while still holding tightly to the
medallion.
“Okay . . . Love you Madison. Granny will see you during the
week.” Mrs. Baldwin says as she places a kiss on Madison cheek, Marshall quickly realizing his son’s name is Madison.
“I Love You Granny! Bye!” Madison says.
“It was nice meeting you Marshall.”
Mrs. Baldwin says as she backs away from them towards the door.
“Tell Carly to call me.” Mrs. Baldwin
says as she is walking out the door.
“Wave bye.” Marshall says as he holds Madison hand up and waves.
“I can do it MY SELF! I’m almost One!”
Madison firmly states as he waves bye, but
looking at Marshall.
“Wait! Does Carly owe you anything?” Marshall asks, as he thinks about what she
said about tell Carly to call me.
“Heavens NO! It was my pleasure having
the babies for the night.” Mrs. Baldwin says as she is cutting across the yard
still waving at Madison.
“Thank You!” Marshall yells as she is going into Dru’s
house.
“Okay . . . Madison.” Marshall struggles to say as he walks back
into the house, and sits down on the bottom step, watching Madison who’s still
hypnotized by the sparkly medallion, drool and all.
“I’m happy you sat down instead of
falling. It’s amazing how sparkly it is. But it still doesn’t taste good. You
wanna taste.” Madison says as he holds the medallion up to Marshall.
“Madison
. . . . . . I’m . . . . . . . . .
I’m Marshall . . . . . We have several choices . .
. . . we can go to Cancun . . . . or . . . stay here and take a nap . . . or . . . . . .
. . . wake your mother . . . . Just to
let you know we can take a nap on the way to Cancun.” Marshall struggles to say, his heart breaking
as perfect crystal blue eyes look up at him like they really know what he is
saying.
“I don’t wanna take a nap! Mommy never
let’s me go anywhere without her. Last night was the first night I got to go
sleep over at Granny’s. Kevvy gets to sleep over at Granny’s all the time.” Madison explains, as he takes another taste
of the medallion.
“California to get your own.” Marshall comments with a laugh but stops
suddenly, as he is trying to get the D-12 medallion away from Madison, and he scrunches up his face,
exactly like Hailie does when she wants her way.
“NOOOOO! You go to California and get Your Own!” Madison firmly states, as he pulls the
medallion back towards him.
